South Carolina’s children need your help NOW!

NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT!

Call your legislator and encourage them to be active in helping Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) and to vote against the proposed 28% cut approved by the House Ways and Means Committee.

The budget plan reduces DDSN’s base budget by $42.3 million plus an addition $4.7 million in state Medicaid matching funds – totaling $47 million in cuts!

What this means is that DDSN will only be able to offer residential services for the 4800 individuals currently being funded. There will not be any funding remaining for other services. These cuts will impact every disability group – children, autism, brain injury, mental retardation, related disabilities and spinal cord injury. These services include:

Early intervention
Day programs/workshops
Respite
Family support
Attendant care
The Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) Program
Specialized therapies
Service coordination and more.

Call your representative today and ask them to restore DDSN’s budget during the floor debate. Ask them to ensure the care of South Carolina’s most vulnerable citizens first.
If you do not know how to contact your legislator, please go to http://www.scstatehouse.gov and click on “find your legislator.”

To write your legislator you can also go to http://capwiz.com/familyvoices/home/. Put your zip code in and your legislators will pop up. Type your letter and send it to your legislator.

**Please note that DDSN will be ineligible for stimulus money if this reduction is made.
